It was senior night at Bleecker Stadium as the Hawks took on the Thunder. Such a special occasion it was, permanent designated hitter Andrew Stanton agreed to strap on the gear and get behind the plate.
The real honorees on senior night waited patiently as the Hawks jumped out to an early lead pushing across 7 runs in the top of the first inning. That would set the tone for the game, the Thunder threatened in the middle innings, closing the gap at 8-4. The Hawks were resilient as they tacked on 3 more runs to take the game 11-4.
Fans who stuck around were in for a treat. Long time Twilight League veterans Bill Behrle and Curtis Nobles were back on the field as the Hawks had their version of senior night. Nobles pinch hit in the 7th inning and grounded out to third while still showing a flash of the speed that put pressure on opponents many years ago. Behrle proved he made the right move calling it quits when he struck out looking in the very next at bat.
Nobles wasn't finished. Perhaps sipping from the fountain of youth, he went to the mound to shut the door. Showing the poise and gamesmanship that hitters feared so long ago, Curtis put the game to bed.
Nick Busby started on the hill for the Hawks. Busby went 3 innings while striking out 5, walking 3 and surrendering 2 runs.
Official word from the Hawks dugout suggests Stanton informed the team he will be leaving the Hawks for at least a week as a result of 7 full innings caught. It was Stanton's first appearance in the field since his days as a Bethlehem Eagle. |
