| HAWKS COMMENTARY: It was a night full of firsts at Bleecker Stadium on Wednesday as the Athletics took on the Hawks. New Hawk Tim Burek started his Twilight League career on the mound and it was one to remember. Burek was opposed by Athletics right hander Zach Breen. Both men were on top of their game on this night as a single run would prove to be enough for victory. Not to be outdone were the folks behind the scenes who scoured the archives for hours to help us capture the unique nature of this night. The Hawks loaded the bases with nobody out in the second inning. Breen was able to escape the jam while only allowing one run. As we would soon find out, that would be all Burek needed as he cruised to a 1-0 triumph. If you are wondering when the last time was that the Hawks won 1-0, under the lights, on the first Wednesday of any given month, you won’t find an answer because this has never happened. Carlos Maldonado and Fred Estes joined forces for the only score of the game. Estes came in on a sacrifice fly marking the first time Estes scored in such a way in games played in the second half of the season against an opposing pitcher 6’2’’ or shorter. The Hawks have never seen a starter pitch their first game of the season in July, on a prime numbered day, and while the temperature did not go above 78 degrees. Enter Tim Burek, who seemed intent on rewriting the record books for the team. Burek helped the Hawks secure their 7th win of the season. If you add that number, 7, to the number of days in July, 31, and subtract the number of games backup catcher/backup DH Andrew Stanton will miss this week, 3, you come out with a product of 35. Burek wears number 35 making this the only instance in Hawk history that has happened.
GAME STORY: Legends Righthander Tim Burek tossed a complete game shutout striking out seven batters and giving up just four hits to lead the Legends Hawks to a 1-0 victory over the Albany Athletics and salvage the third game of the three-game season series between the two teams this year. The Hawks have won four straight with its last loss coming to the A's exactly two weeks ago. Carlos Maldonado hit a bases loaded sac fly in the 2nd inning to drive in Fred Estes for the only run of the game. Burek meanwhile quelled three Albany rallies in which the Athletics had a runner on second or third base with less than two outs. Albany Righthander Zach Breen went the distance and struck out eight batters and gave up only three hits in the loss. |
